Check your 2013 star notes for this EXTRA error!

A primer on mismatched serial numbers

Two serial numbers are commonly present on banknotes. These values may not match due to human or mechanical mistake. A manual error occurs when the individual using the printing device neglects to set both number wheels to the same sequence before printing starts. It is a human error when Mismatched Serial Numbers have a discrepancy towards the start of the number. Here's the G55/54 mistake as an illustration:

starting with 55 vs. 54

The error above sold at auction on March 15, 2022 for $840.

Failure to Advance

It is frequently a mechanical fault when there is a mismatch at the conclusion of the serial number. This occurs when a numbering machine becomes stuck on a certain number and stops correctly advancing. The serial number error for this 1963 $1 Federal Reserve Note (New York) is B57476899A vs. B57476900A, and the difference between the two numbers is 1. This note sold for $1050 at a Stack's Bowers auction in April 2022.

Ending with 900 vs. 899

Another manual error type

Manual error may also be the cause of mismatched Serial Numbers near the end of the number. With these two 1935A $1 Silver Certificates that PMG encased jointly, that appears to be the case. Mismatched Serial Number Error: T30211030C and T30211060C, a discrepancy of 30 is present on the first note. Usually, it is impossible to determine which number was manually entered wrongly. However, the serial number on the second note is the same as the one on the mistake note's right side.  These 2 notes, paired together, fetched $3,360 at a Stack's Bowers auction in April, 2022.

Should it be ending with 030 or 060?

An Error on an Error

Recently a 2013 Star Note whose serial number was in the correct range to be one half of a duplicated serial number pair was shown on a YouTube channel.   The surprising part was that this production error note also featured a mismatched serial number!

Wait.... What?

Since this appears to be the 3rd type of mismatch error mentioned in the primer, it begs the question, is there a note out there that has the serial number 08492894 printed in both serial number locations like it should be?  Or does the note exist for the other serial number; 08493894?  Heck, maybe BOTH of these exist!? The above note was submitted to the 2013B database last March, but using only one of the serial numbers.  I have added the other serial number in order to 'catch' any potential matches in the future.  Both serial numbers have a note in the comments column of the PDF list, marking them as a mismatched serial number note.

Today's homework:

Check your 2013 star notes to see if you have this error!  Remember to look for all 3 types of mismatched numbers (the first digit, the ending digits being different, and the type where a number near end digit is different).  Simply put, the bottom-left serial number should be identical to the top-right serial number, otherwise you have this mismatched serial number error, on top of the already 'duplicate serial number production error' between the Washington DC and Fort Worth printed bills.  What a mouthful!

10 Tips for Properly Handling Your Collectable Banknotes

10 Tips for Properly Handling Your Collectable Banknotes

treat with care and kid gloves

Inspired by a true life event of one of the registered bill owners who bought a bill from an individual who had the matching serial number to his banknote.  Long story short: do not use an eraser on your banknote!

Rather than becoming just a blog post, it is presented as a stand-alone webpage which I plan to eventually add to a new educational section of this website. The article can be found here:

Two more old bills saved from the government shredder

PROJECT 2013B has it's 44th confirmed match! There are now 56 confirmed matching pairs over the history of this project, the project that preceded it, and matched pairs spotted at auctions. Started in October of 2021, Project 2013B started with a list of 10,072 banknotes, and now has over 37,362 unique banknotes registered it its database, and 6204 members.
The 'Fort Worth' printed 2013B star note was registered 2023.05.11 by member d6dBv
The 'Washington DC' printed 2013B star note was registered 2022.08.28 by member oZAMD

I found it on 07 March 23 as I sorted through my weekly $4,000 notes from several "draw" banks between Trenton and Wildwood, NJ. I then use "dump banks" to return them, keeping the flow as fresh as I could from the Federal Reserve banking system. I have gleaned some 44 qualifying 2013B Project Notes from circulation in this manner. I started with 18 notes found in my hoard of collected star notes from years ago. Being in the New York FRB area, we still see many in circulation. This is sooooooooo exciting!
Photos of the bills from both parties officially confirmed a match tonight. From the day the match was detected in the database, to today's photo verification took 2 days.
Close to 80% of all known Duplicate Serial Number Pairs have been discovered by Project 2013B !
The running list of confirmed pairs (which will be updated soon) can be found at: https://project2013b.blogspot.com/p/confirmed-pairs.html
Remember to check your spam folders just in case a matching pair announcement is emailed to you, and you could see your bill showcased here. Check the match-making list to see if your serial number (or member ID) is on the list of people I need to hear back from: http://bit.ly/3jXYNwl

Matched Pair up for auction

Two dudes who are spearheading the 'process' of getting their matched pair both granding company and up for auction have endured months of delay from both the backlog at PMG and the auction house itself.  Now their pair is officially up for auction at https://bit.ly/3nZ3nwc

The pair was originally discovered by Project 2013B back in January (see post).

The pair back when the bills lead separate empty lives

Here are the bills now, all graded and certifed, and ready for their moment in the sun:

From common everyday dollar bills to fame and fortune

The auction ends in 22 days, on Sun, Jun 04, 2023 06:30:30 PM Pacific Time

As posted on the May 5th post, a different pair with lower grades of 40 and 25 recently sold for $6,600 (including buyer's premium).
